In order to get off to a good start in 2008, I need to find people with ugly and/or vacant houses that I will be able to wholesale. Unfortunately, money is tight so a full blown marketing campaign is not an option at this point. I have spent time in the past "driving for dollars" and that has led to a few possible leads, but I feel that I have to come up with other ways of finding prospects (more than one line in the water, sort to speak). Does anybody have any cheap (perferably FREE) ideas on how to locate properties? Thanks in advance.

I'm no marketing genious, but have been around long enough to see some different inexpensive marketing ideas. I think the one I see more than any is bandit signs. Here is a thread about those...
http://flipitbig.com/showthread.php?t=23 I have also seen a lot of those handwritten signs you stick in the ground. They may not last long but you put them in the right spots with a phone # on them it may be worth it. Maybe you could replace them once a week? Maybe some cheap (or even free) business cards... Boyd will buy your house, 555-1212. Drop em all over Walmart, the mall, the strip club (LOL), or wherever you go. Maybe some flyers you can print up cheap and put in people's windsheilds? Let's see... Boyd will buy your house car magnets and during your lunch hour and after work drive around downtown. I bought some of those a few years ago for under $100. Maybe craigslist? Again, I am no marketing genious, these are just some of the things I have seen out there. Good luck my friend! Anybody else have any ideas?

Boyd,
While I am also no marketing guru I have had my share of experiences. I personally created a website www.205homebuyers.com and all that cost me was $10.00 for the domain and I hosted it on my servers so that cost me nothing. I also designed the site so that saved. You could possibly do up a website easy or if I have spare time in the next week or so can help you out in that aspect. Second I went to vistaprint.com and ordered a set of business cards. You can get the basic cards for free and all you have to do is pay for shipping, which is very affordable. I opted for a more personalized business card which I have attached it to this thread. I think I paid $20.00 for 500 of these. So I didn't do to bad. Also, I place business cards everywhere. I leave them at restaurants. Any place with a bulletin board. I give them to Friends, leave them at the gas station pumps when I am filling up my car. Not to mention I constantly work on my website and submit them to search engines. Another thing you can do is sponsor a little league sports team which gets your name on their shirts! This is just off the top of my head and all of these are very affordable.

I do already have a website, but thanks for offering to help me with one. I'm pretty familiar with html web code, so all it cost me was the $10 domain name registration fee and a little bit of time. I haven't submitted it to any search engines, though. I'm thinking that it would just be something to throw on my marketing materials and business cards.

Very simple and easy to navigate. It's not intimidating at all, I like that. You get much action off of it?

Not much action unfortunately. I used it in an ad I put on Craigslist a couple of months ago. I got several hits, but nobody filled out the web forms or anything. I need to be more aggressive in marketing the website, I think.

You deff. need to submit to the search engines.
Here is a must submit: http://www.google.com/addurl also: http://www.submitexpress.com/submit.html Those are free search engine submissions which only takes a few minutes to complete.
